At the final M&T Bank Classics concert of the 2014-15 season, the BPO recognized several musicians who were retiring or celebrating milestone anniversaries with the orchestra.
This concert, titled “Ella, Louis and All that Jazz,” marked the jazziest the orchestra had ever sounded, to my recollection.
In an impressive line past conductors including the likes of Lukas Foss and Michael Tilson Thomas, Falletta ranks as its most prominent and respected leader both locally and internationally.

“To be recognized as a music educator from a smaller school shows that even though we are a small school, we are still capable of doing great things,” she said.
It was so touching to see the veterans waving, saluting each other and leaning across the aisles to shake hands. “Thank you for your service. God bless you,” Sanders said.
Leonard Bernstein was influential in bringing the symphonies of Mahler into the standard repertory, so pairing the Serenade with Mahler’s First Symphony seems very appropriate.
